Ace woman boxer threatens to quit boxing, give up national award
September 25th, 2010 - 4:16 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Sep. 25 (ANI): Ace woman boxer Laishram Sarita Devi declared that she would quit boxing forever and also give up the Arjuna Award conferred by the government if the trials of women boxers for the 2010 Asian Games are not conducted again.
Sarita Devi said this while interacting with the media persons at New Delhi on Friday.
She also claimed that she had already been selected after the earlier trials held in Bhopal last month.
“If they do not allow for another trail and take any action, then I am going to give up boxing. I have been practicing boxing from last 13 years and I have been playing in Indian team since last 10 years. I have brought fame to the country by playing in several weight categories,” said Sarita Devi.
“I have played for 57, 54, 52 and 51 category weights. After playing for so many years, at the time of Olympics and Asian Games, they have started playing tricks. This is why India lags behind in sports we do not get proper support,” she added.
During the trials conducted in New Delhi on Wednesday, Mary Kom, the five-time world champion beat Sarita.
According Sarita Devi, her family members or admirers and media persons were not allowed to witness the trials held in Delhi.
“There should be a retrial in front of media. And if they do not do this and meet my demands, then I am going to quit boxing and also the honour that I had received in 2009 from the Indian government I would return it and after that I will quit boxing,” said Sarita Devi.
