$300 mn sports complex opened in Dubai
October 11th, 2010 - 11:32 pm ICT by IANSDubai, Oct 11 (IANS/WAM) A multipurpose sports complex constructed at an estimated cost of 1.1 billion dirhams (around $300 million) has opened in Dubai, which is preparing to host the World Swimming Championships in December.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council Sunday launched the Dubai Sports Complex built over a sprawling 61 acre plot.
An aquatic centre within the complex will host the 10th FINA World Swimming Championships Dec 15-19, which is being held for the first time in an Arab country.
With the seating capacity of 15,000, the facility will herald a golden era in sporting events in the region once it successfully hosts the championships, in which 130 countries are expected to participate.
The project also includes changing rooms for 400 athletes, rooms for umpires, multipurpose halls, a health club, a gymnasium, training pools and other facilities.
