28-year-old man arrested for New Jersey airport security breach
January 9th, 2010 - 4:10 pm ICT by ANINew Jersey, Jan 9(ANI): Port Authority police of New Jersey has said that they have arrested the man seen in the surveillance video, who allegedly breached security at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The man, identified as 28-year-old Haisong Jiang, has been charged with criminal trespass for Sunday’s security breach that led the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to shut down one of the airport’s three terminals for six hours, stranding thousands of passengers and contributing to major delays.
Jiang was caught after TSA examined the footage and saw him ducking under a rope barrier to enter a secure area to hug a woman.
“With this arrest, law enforcement will be able to take a closer look into how and why this incident occurred and make sure that it never happens again,” the Daily News quoted Frank R. Lautenberg, Senator of New Jersey, as saying.
A bystander waiting for an arriving passenger had noticed the breach and informed the guard.
TSA officials had initially discovered that surveillance cameras at the security checkpoint had not recorded the breach and were forced to consult backup security cameras operated by Continental Airlines.
Jiang was seen leaving the terminal about 20 minutes later after the breach.
Meanwhile, Ruben Hernandez, the guard who was on duty at the time of the breach, has been on administrative leave since Tuesday and faces possible disciplinary action. (ANI)
