London, Mar 19 (ANI): England rugby star Chris Ashton has revealed that he was forced to undergo an initiation ceremony into the England team during which he had to sink 21 alcoholic drinks in just a few hours. The 23-year-old winger said that it was tradition that every player making an international debut for England takes part in the challenge.

He told how all new players have to take one drink with each of the 21 other players in the listed squad.

The 6ft 1in Northampton Saints player-famous for his flamboyant ’swallow dives’ as he scores a try said that the binge left him feeling ‘battered’.

“When you play for England for the first time, you have to have a drink with everyone in the team. That’s one drink with each person and it’s whatever they want to have. After my debut I was battered,” the Daily Mail quoted him as telling Shortlist lifestyle magazine. He joked that players have been known to vanish ‘for days’ after their initiations.

Team-mate James Haskell said that the sessions would start with players being ‘lulled following a few easy beers’.

He added: “Then of course the stitch-up merchants hove into view and it all starts - rum and cokes, gin, whisky. There are those who order a shot of vodka for you and a shot of water for themselves and by the end Del Boy-style cocktails with umbrellas and cherries are produced.” (ANI)
