Zia-ul-Haq’s son says he got Zardari released from jail in 2005
June 2nd, 2009 - 2:29 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Islamabad, June 2 (ANI): Pakistan Muslim League leader Ejaz-ul-Haq has revealed that Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari had secretly sought his help in 2005 to secure his release from jail.
Haq, the son of late president General Zia-ul-Haq, further claimed that he delivered on Zardari’s request, and pleaded before the top military brass to release him.
Two weeks later, Zardari was released on bail by the Supreme Court, The News quoted Haq, as saying.
Haq told reporters that he had only ideological differences with the PPP, and his efforts to secure Zardari’s release in 2005 proves that there were no personal issues with the party.
According to Haq, a close aide of Zardari called him up in 2005, and sought his help for Zardari’s release.
Haq met top commanders and argued Zardari’s case on the ground that he had spent so many years in jail without any charge being established against him.
Two weeks later, Zardari was allowed bail by the Supreme Court.
Much to Haq’s own surprise, Zardari made two personal telephone calls to him to say “thank you” for playing a pivotal role in his release.
However, Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar dismissed the entire story as a publicity gimmick.
Babar criticized those who were busy taking the credit for having played some role in Zardari’s political rise.
“It seems now Ijaz-ul Haq too wants his name in the same long list,” he said. (ANI)
