US policy towards Pakistan has been ‘incoherent’ for last 30 years: ClintonMay 20th, 2009 - 2:00 pm ICT by ANI
Washington, May 20 (ANI): US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said the United States policies towards Pakistan have been inconsistent over the last 30 years.
“It is fair to say that our policy towards Pakistan over the last 30 years has been incoherent. I don’t know any other word,” The Dawn quoted Clinton, as saying.
Talking to media persons at the Foreign Press Centre here, Clinton also admitted that the US and Pakistan partnered to train the Mujahideen in the 1980’s during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.
When asked as to why the United States was unable to determine and cut-off supply lines of the Taliban, she said Washington was aware of the situation in Pakistan, and that it is working in the right direction.
‘Yes, we know that the extremists are being supplied. It (disrupting the Taliban’s supply lines) is a challenge, but we are addressing that,” Clinton added.
She said that the Obama administration is eager to extend all help to the Pakistan leadership in its bid to quell the insurgency which not only poses a threat to Pakistan, but also to the US.
“The US was assisting the new government in Islamabad to be as successful as possible in delivering, we believe the future of Pakistan is extremely important for the US. The advance of extremism is a threat to our security,” Clinton said.
Clinton said that Al-Qaeda’s primary motive was not only to create havoc in the United States, but also target its allies in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“They have not given up on their desire to inflict damage, harm and murder on the USA, this is how we see helping our friends and allies. We have walked away in the past, now we are going to forge a partnership with the government and the people of Pakistan,” she said.
When asked to comment about the Musharraf dictatorship, Clinton said : ” That while it was difficult to speculate why former President General Pervez Musharraf did what he did while he was in power, he ended his time in office when extremists had found sanctuary in Pakistan and were the strongest.” (ANI)
