US offers 5-mn-dollar reward for information on HUJI commander Ilyas Kashmiri
April 7th, 2011 - 11:28 am ICT by ANIWashington, April 7(ANI): The United States is offering five million dollars as reward money for information leading to the location of Mohammad Ilyas Kashmiri, the commander of Al Qaida-supporting terrorist organization Harakat-ul-Jihad al-Islami (HUJI).
The US State Department said in a statement that Kashmiri has led HUJI training camps and his organization has launched several attacks in India and Pakistan since 2001, including the March 2006 suicide bombing against the US Consulate in Karachi, which killed US diplomat David Foy and three other people, and injured 48 others.
In January 2010, a US federal grand jury indicted Kashmiri for terrorism-related offences in connection with a terrorist plot to attack the Jyllands-Posten newspaper in Denmark.
On August 6, 2010, the US Treasury Secretary designated Kashmiri as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” and the US Secretary of State designated HUJI as a “Foreign Terrorist Organization,” the statement said.
“Both designations, which were reached after consultation with the Attorney General, provide U.S. law enforcement agencies the legal means to restrict resources to both Kashmiri and HUJI,” it added.
The notification gave detailed physical appearance of Kashmiri, and said that the fugitive is also known by several aliases, including Muhammad Ilyas Kashmiri, Elias al-Kashmiri, Ilyas, Naib Amir, and Commando Commander.
The State Department encouraged anyone with information on Kashmiri’s location to contact the nearest US embassy or consulate, any US military commander or the Rewards for Justice office. (ANI)
