Islamabad, May 20 (IANS) At least one person was killed and 10 people, including two Americans, were injured Friday in a powerful explosion that targeted US consulate vehicles in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar.
The huge blast took place at 8.25 a.m. just when two US consulate vehicles were passing by.
Xinhua quoted a US spokesperson in Peshawar as saying that the vehicle damaged in the blast belonged to the consulate and the two injured Americans were consulate employees.
The two Americans hurt in Friday’s blast were shifted to the consulate instead of being sent to a local hospital.
Friday’s blast, the police said, was targeted at Americans as the roadside bomb went off when the consulate’s Toyota Landcruiser and another consulate vehicle passed by on Abadarra road.
The tail end of the Landcruiser was seriously damaged while the other consulate vehicle was intact.
It is estimated that the remote controlled bomb contained 50 kg of explosives.
Pakistan Taliban and Al Qaeda have vowed to avenge the death of Osama bin Laden by threatening to launch attacks on the US and Pakistan. Osama was gunned down May 2 by US Navy SEALs who swooped into Abbottabad city onboard stealth helicopters and then stormed the Al Qaeda leader’s high-walled hideout.
Barely 10 days later May 13, the Taliban viciously struck back with two suicide bombers blowing themselves up at a training centre for Pakistani security personnel, killing at least 80 people and injuring over 100. The bombers struck at the Frontier Constabulary in Shabqadar area of Charsadda town, 35 km from Peshawar, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
No group has claimed the responsibility for the blast.
