UN condemns attack on Pakistan relief camp
April 18th, 2010 - 2:44 am ICT by IANSIslamabad, April 18 (IANS) The UN Saturday strongly condemned the twin suicide blasts at a relief camp in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP), killing at least 41 people.
The blasts took place at the Sherkot registration point in Kohat when two suicide bombers dressed in burqas struck a crowd of displaced people collecting aid handouts, Dawn said on its website.
“The attack hits Pakistan’s most vulnerable people who have already suffered because of the ongoing fighting in the tribal areas,” Martin Mogwanja, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan, said in a statement.
The UN said it was temporarily suspending work helping displaced people in Kohat and neighbouring Hangu as a result of the attack that also injured dozens of people.
At least 210,000 people have been displaced from the tribal districts of Orakzai and Kurram and most of them have registered in Kohat and Hangu towns.
