UAE firm to support Pakistan relief efforts
September 14th, 2010 - 12:39 am ICT by IANSSharjah, Sep 13 (IANS/WAM) An aviation company in the United Arab Emirates said Monday it will not charge for transporting UN World Food Programme (WFP) relief material for Pakistan’s flood-affected areas.
“This national disaster in Pakistan has caught the world’s attention. As an organisation that has been involved in some large cargo movements, we could not just stand and be onlookers,” said Saleh Al Aroud Managing, director of RUS Aviation.
WFP will transport hundreds of tonnes of relief material in several cargo movements. RUS Aviation has sent one aircraft to Karachi and will also transport cargo to other flood-hit cities in Pakistan.
Floods in Pakistan have killed over 1,700 people and affected about 21 million. The government has estimated more than $43 billion would be needed to rehabilitate the displaced people and raise the devastated infrastructure again.
