Colombo, May 31 (IANS) At least two civilians were killed and nine wounded in a hand grenade blast in Colombo Saturday night, the defence ministry said. “The explosion took place near a bus halt along the Colombo-Galle main road, opposite the Arpico super market in Wellawatta,” the ministry said, adding that the victims were rushed to the nearby Kalubowila hospital for medical attention.
Police cordoned off the blast site and were conducting investigations.
While no organisation claimed responsibility for the attack till late night, the government usually attributes such attacks to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The explosion came on a day the ministry said at least 26 LTTE rebels were killed and 23 wounded during fighting in the northern battlefronts Friday. It said four soldiers were also killed and 13 wounded in the battles.
