Three suspected militants killed in US drone strike in North Waziristan
June 11th, 2010 - 12:28 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, Jun.11 (ANI): At least three suspected militants were killed in a US drone strike in the restive North Waziristan’s Miranshah region.
According to reports, unmanned US Predator aircraft fired two missiles on a house, believed to be a militant hideout, in Norak village situated 20 kilometres east of Miranshah.
The house, which was destroyed completely in the missile hit, was surrounded by locals soon after the drones struck.
Panic prevailed in the region with locals fearing more such attacks as three Predators were seen hovering over the area, The Daily Times reports.
The drone strike comes days after a report by a top UN official criticised the Obama administration for continuing the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operated drone attacks in the semi-autonomous tribal areas of Pakistan, as it has resulted in countless civilian deaths.
UN’s special rapporteur on extra judicial, summary or arbitrary executions Phillip Alston, in his report, argued that drone strikes amount to a “license to kill” without being held accountable, a license the U.S. would not want any other country to have.
While the Obama administration is yet to publicly accept the responsibility for the drone hits, the CIA maintains that the attacks carried out by the unmanned aircraft are infact overseen by the White House and Congress, and refuted reports that the agency lacked accountability. (ANI)
