Three held for Sri Lankan team attackMay 13th, 2009 - 10:04 pm ICT by IANS
Lahore, May 13 (IANS) Three men said to belong to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi terror group have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the March 3 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team that claimed the lives of eight Pakistanis and injured six players.
Quoting sources, Geo TV said the accused are members of banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and hail from southern Punjab. Following their arrest, they had been moved to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
This raises to seven the number of people who have been arrested for the attack. Four of them had been arrested on the day of the assault
The sources said that two of the men arrested Tuesday were directly involved in the attack on the Sri Lankan players, while the third hand provided logistics support to the attackers.
According to sources, they had received training in a militant camp situated in Wana.
The planning had begun about two months before the Sri Lankan team arrived in Pakistan.
Masked terrorists armed with automatic weapons had March 3 opened relentless fire at the convoy of the Sri Lankan cricket team as it headed for Lahore’s Gaddafi stadium.
A military helicopter later whisked the players to safety as Sri Lanka cancelled its Pakistan tour.
Six of those killed in the assault were police bodyguards meant to provide security to the team, while two bystanders also lost their lives as the terrorists wrought mayhem in the area for almost 25 minutes.
A group of 12 gunmen carrying rocket launchers and grenades had targeted the team bus about 500 yards from Gaddafi stadium, where Sri Lanka was to play Pakistan on the third day of their second cricket test.
The attack, being compared to the 26/11 Mumbai carnage, was the biggest attack on foreigners ever since the attack on Marriott Hotel last September in which the Czech ambassador and three American marines were among the 53 people killed.
The terror attack sparked outrage in Sri Lanka, with President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructing that the players be brought home immediately.
The Sri Lankan team was in Pakistan to play in place of India that had pulled out of the series after the Nov 26-29, 2008 Mumbai carnage that has been blamed on Pakistani terrorists.
