Terrorists wanted to hold Pakistani generals hostage: Report
November 17th, 2009 - 1:15 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Nov 17 (IANS) The terrorists who carried out a brazen attack on the Pakistani Army Headquarter in the garrison city of Rawalpindi in October had chalked out a plan to hold generals hostage, a probe report has said.
The investigation report on the Oct 10 terror strike on the heavily fortified army headquarters has been sent to army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani.
A group of terrorists had struck at the army headquarters in Rawalpindi, adjacent to Islamabad. The bloody siege came to an end a day later after crack commandos stormed the complex, freeing 39 hostages.
The leader of the terror group Aqeel alias Dr. Usman was arrested. He is also accused of masterminding the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.
Most of the information was provided to the investigators by Dr. Usman, security sources told The News International.
Dr. Usman told the interrogators that they wanted to storm army headquarters on the day of corps commanders meeting so that they could hold generals hostage to get their 100 arrested accomplices released, the sources said.
The terrorists stayed at Rawalpindi for at least one month prior to the attack to get information and monitor the army headquarters.
No army man or employee of the GHQ was directly or indirectly involved in the deadly event, the sources said.
