Strong Earthquake Rattles Pakistan

earth1Jan 19, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The US Geological Survey has announced that a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.2 rocked the areas of Southwest Pakistan on Tuesday night. Though the citizens of Pakistan were shocked to the core but the rescue operation officials said that they have not received any report of injuries or casualties. The jolt was felt not only in Pakistan but also in some parts of Iran, Dubai and also in India. The television footage showed the panicked people running out of their houses and citing verses from Quran to save their lives.

The United States Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred at 1:23 a.m. at a depth of 84 kilometers. Arif Mahmood, Pakistan Meteorological Department’s director said that the epicenter of the massive earthquake was 320 kilometers southwest of Quetta, Balochistan and it was also felt in several Balochistan provinces, Punjab and Sindh. The director said that the citizens will remain in aftershock for some days as quakes of such magnitude has brought in aftershocks before as well. Even the mud walled walls near Kharan, Dalbadin and Kalat were damaged though no people were injured in the accident.

Balochsitan’s law enforcement officials said that they have not received any report of injuries. People from earthquake affected places took to their social networking site to share their terrifying experiences. The local media outlets reported that the tremor lasted for about 20 seconds. Just few moths back, Pakistan witnessed the wrath of nature after the massive flood and this earthquake would surely be a blow to their confidence. Back in 2005, a major earthquake in Northern Pakistan killed around 70,000 people and 3.5 million people were left homeless.
