Sonia backs PM on India-Pakistan statement

New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) Strongly backing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s declaration that there was no dilution of the national consensus on countering terrorism emanating from Pakistan, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi Thursday said India’s foreign policy with respect to its neighbour had not changed.
“No one should be in any doubt on our party’s position vis-à-vis Pakistan. It remains unchanged,” Gandhi said at a Congress parliamentary party meeting.
“We support the resumption of the dialogue process with Pakistan, but only after it has demonstrated its seriousness to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai terror attacks to justice and to prevent its territory from being used to launch terror attacks on any part of our country.”
Gandhi also pointed out these were imperatives for restoring confidence and building an environment conducive to any meaningful dialogue.
On Wednesday, the prime minister allayed apprehensions in the Lok Sabha over the move to delink action on terrorism from the composite dialogue process as contained in the India-Pakistan joint statement issued in Egypt July 16.
He stoutly maintained that bilateral engagement or dialogue process can’t move forward if terrorist attacks continue from across the border.
