PPP probe report confirms Musharraf, Elahi not involved in Benazir’s assassination

Islamabad, April 8(ANI): Investigations into the Benazir Bhutto assassination case have not found even an iota of evidence about the involvement of former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, former Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi or any other person nominated by Benazir during her life.
Musharraf, during whose presidency former Prime Minister Benazir’s assassination took place in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007, was not named an accused in the original FIR, but the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) later required him for investigation and named him in the case suspecting him of abetment/conspiracy, following which the court issued non-bailable arrest warrants thrice for him.
Over three years after Benazir’s assassination, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) government’s investigations have concluded what the Musharraf regime had announced within a couple of days following her murder.
In his recent briefing to the party leadership on the matter, Interior Minister Rehman Malik put all the blame on al-Qaeda and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as was claimed by Musharraf’s regime within days of Benazir’s assassination, The News quoted PPP sources, as saying.
They said that selected leaders in the PPP, who were briefed about the outcome of the joint investigation into this high profile murder case, expressed their satisfaction over the probe.
It is said that even some of those PPP leaders, who had been publicly demanding the inclusion of Musharraf into this murder case, were also satisfied with Malik’s report on the investigation, the report said.It was, however, decided not to make the report public, as the authorities fear that some people, who are under surveillance for their possible connection with the murder case, might get alerted, it added.
The Joint Investigation Team constituted by the PPP government has verified that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), led at the time by Baitullah Mehsud, carried out the attack that killed Bhutto.
According to the report, three key suspects directly involved in the assassination plan are still at large. The withholding of the report from making it public is said to be connected with the missing suspects, who have been identified but not yet arrested. (ANI)
