PPP MNAs-elect formula: Keep mum to get plum federal portfolios!

Islamabad, Mar 10 (ANI): Even as suspense over the nomination of candidate for the post of prime minister goes on in the PPP, the partys MNAs-elect are keeping mum and not siding with any of the camps so as to secure important portfolios in the next federal government.

They want to show themselves impartial to either of the two camps led by Makhdoom Amin Fahim or Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar, because if they align with one and the other is made the PM, they might lose their cabinet berths.

“There is not only a race for future PM but also for securing important portfolios in the cabinet-in-waiting. PPP legislators-elect are involved in hectic lobbying to get accommodated in the cabinet and everyone aspires for an important ministerial berth,” The Nation quoted a newly elected PPP MNA, as saying.

“If I support Fahim and Mukhtar is chosen as a party candidate for the slot of premiership, the chances of my ministership would go bleak”, he said adding that it was judicious to keep mouth shut in the time of crucial confrontation.

He added: “The hopefuls of ministerial berths do not want to exhibit their sympathies as it could block their way to the future cabinet. Almost all of the MNAs-elect have categorically said that PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari is free to decide according to his free will.”

Acknowledging that Zardari was the sole power in the party, the unidentified MNA-elect said that he was the man who enjoyed unshared powers in the party and would in future allocate ministerial berths. “The parliamentarians who wish to be inducted into the cabinet want to prove their undiluted allegiance towards Zardari only,” he said.

He further said: “Frankly speaking, I myself could not read Zardari’s mind clearly and do not know about his personal leaning regarding the decision of the party candidate for PM slot. If Ahmad Mukhtar is Zardari’s blue-eyed man and I speak in favour of Fahim, I fear it would diminish my chances to be a minister.” (ANI)
