PPP divided over judicial inquiry in Taseer killing
January 15th, 2011 - 7:19 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Jan 15 (IANS) The ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) appears to be divided over instituting a judicial inquiry into the assassination of Punjab governor Salman Taseer, with two federal ministers contradicting each other on the issue.Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said Friday that judicial proceedings will be initiated soon into Taseer’s assassination, while Interior Minister Rehman Malik stated that investigations have been completed, the Express Tribune reported Saturday.
Malik said there was no need of any judicial inquiry.
Taseer was shot dead Jan 4 by Mumtaz Qadri, who was member of the governor’s special security squad.
While talking to reporters in Lahore, Kaira said that judicial proceedings will be initiated soon and that all problems will be resolved with the consultation of the national leadership. He added that the appointment of Sardar Latif Khosa as the new Punjab governor will increase political consensus.
After a meeting with Khosa, Malik expressed confidence in Khosa’s ability to promote harmony between the PPP and the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N in Punjab.
Khosa said that he would work with the Punjab government in order to improve the law and order situation in the province.
