Lahore, Mar 6(ANI): A constitutional petition has been filed in the Pakistan Supreme Court for reopening and re-adjudication of the matter of Indian prisoner Sarbajit Singh, who was awarded death sentence by the apex court in 2006.

Sarabjit’s counsel, Owais Sheikh, moved the petition before the Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court, and argued that the man behind the bomb blast in Pakistan in 1990 was actually Manjeet Singh, with whom Sarbajit had been confused.

“Manjeet was arrested in India in December 2010. He is an international terrorist and member of a criminal syndicate,” the Daily Times quoted Sheikh, as saying.

He said that Manjeet was the real culprit as he frequently visited Pakistan.

“Even when the blast took place in 1990, he was present in the country,” he said, adding that Sarbajit was the victim of mistaken identity.

He pleaded to the court to order reopening of the case and fresh adjudication on the matter.

Sarabjit was arrested in 1990 on the charges of espionage and terrorism and was first awarded death sentence by the Lahore High Court in January 2003.

Singh, who has been dubbed as an agent of Indian intelligence agency RAW, had admitted before the Pakistan courts of changing his name, sometimes as Sarbajit Singh and sometimes as Manjit Singh. (ANI)
