Lahore, Oct 21 (ANI): Newly appointed PCB chief Ijaz Butt has reportedly said that national team coach Geoff Lawson was useless, but he would be allowed to complete his full two-year term because the Board will suffer a huge financial loss if it terminated his services now.

Lawson is a useless man. But there is no use removing him now and we will allow him to complete his contract, which will not be renewed. We will suffer a huge financial loss if we terminate his contract now, the Daily Times quoted Butt as saying in his first press conference after assuming the charge of Board chief.

He said he favoured having a home-grown player in charge of coaching the team.

Butt also said that national team captain Shoaib Maliks performance would be reviewed when his current contract ends in December.

According to reports appearing in Pakistani media, Lawson, an Aussie, is paid 30,000 dollars a month, and if his contract was terminated the PCB will have to pay him three months salary.

Under Lawsons coaching, Pakistan has lost two important Test series, first against South Africa at home and then against India in India last year. Besides, Pakistan also failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup at home in July.

Lawson, who joined the Pakistan team in July 2007 after the untimely death of Bob Woolmer during the World Cup in Jamaica , has had a troubled relationship with the Pakistani media and some board officials. (ANI)
