Islamabad, Aug.14 (ANI): Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Kayani has said country’s ongoing struggle against various terrorist groups was a fight against extremism and militancy, and that it was not against any particular religion, ethnicity or sub-nationalism.

Speaking at the second annual Azadi Parade at Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul, General Kayani said militants would not be allowed to enforce their ‘narrow and distorted’ version of Islam in the country.

“Let me emphasize that no extremist or terrorist can impose his distorted version of Islam through violent means. We, in Pakistan, are committed to defending our country against all external and internal threats,” The Daily Times quoted Kayani, as saying.

He however said, it was difficult to weed out militancy through military means only, as such a step would create more trouble in the country.

“There was no notion of ‘absolute victory’ in this struggle. Any attempt to impose a pure military solution through brute force was a dangerous and destructive proposition,” he said.

“The use of force should be a last resort, and to the extent necessary to achieve peace, security and stability,” Kayani added.

Hinting at India’s recent launch of its first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine INS-Arihant, Kayani said Islamabad is concerned over massive arms acquisitions in the region, and added that Pakistan was a peaceful country with no aggressive plans.

He, however, said that Pakistan is capable enough of giving a fitting reply to its enemies.

“Let no one underestimate the resolve of the armed forces and resilience of the Pakistani nation,” Kayani said. (ANI)
