- Islamabad, Oct.14 (ANI): Pakistan’s Shakarparian Tree Garden is eyeing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world’s only garden where 112 international leaders have planted saplings while on a visit to a country.
Situated on a low hill between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, the Shakarparian garden has about 112 saplings planted by foreign dignitaries since 1964.
According to Pakistani environment officials, there are no other gardens in the world where such a large number of trees have been planted by foreign leaders.
According to records, the first sapling was implanted here in February 1964 by Chinese Prime Minister Zhouenlai, followed by King Faisal of Saudi Arabia who planted a sapling in April, 1966.
Other prominent world leaders who have planted trees in the garden include US President George Bush (Senior), erstwhile USSR President Alexei Kosygin, French President Francois Mitterrand, King Shah Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, and Iranian President Hashmi Rafsanjani, The Daily Times reports.
However, after December 2007, when Afghan President Hamid Karzai had enrooted a sapling here, no other leader has visited this park, which offers one of the most scenic views of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. (ANI)
