London, Feb. 25 (ANI): With a rating of 65 percent, women of Pakistani origin have the highest economic inactivity rate in the UK, a British Government data has revealed. The British Government report, which was part of its new plan to achieve race equality, further reveals that Pakistani and Bangladesh children were twice as likely to grow up in poverty as white children, The News reports.
People of the Indian backgrounds, however, were more successful in terms of education and employment as compared to the rest of the population, the report says.
Addressing a press conference, British Community Cohesion Minister Sadiq Khan said the statistics show that in 2006- 7, among women, Pakistani women had the highest rate of unemployment, the highest rate of economic inactivity and the second lowest rate of employment.
Pakistani men had the joint third highest rate of economic inactivity.
The figures also show Pakistani households have the third highest rates of home ownership that is very similar to the white British population.
Khan said, although the government has made significant progress in tackling race equality in the job market and health services, education, housing and criminal justice, there remains a lot to be done to improve the lot of the minority community as well as the white people living on the poverty line.
As part of its race equality drive, British government is a funding of six million pounds sterling for a wide-reaching consultation on improving opportunities for Black, Asian and minority ethnic people. Another six million pounds will be allocated after consultation finishes this May.
Khan said together with Secretary Hazel Blears, he would be visiting eight UK cities in the coming months to consult the people on further improving racial equality. (ANI)
