Islamabad, Dec 25 (IANS) Pakistan Information Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan tendered her resignation during a cabinet meeting Sunday while expressing her disappointment over the “attitude” of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leadership.
Awan announced her resignation at the meeting presided over by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, Dawn News reported.
“I endorse your leadership (but) I think I am not competent enough to continue as cabinet member and hence submit my resignation,” said a tearful Awan during the televised cabinet meeting.
Awan might have been forced to resign due to her failure to convincingly defend the government in the “memogate scandal”, according to some analysts.
Pakistan’s Supreme Court is hearing the case about a secret memo sent to Washington that claimed President Asif Ali Zardari feared a military coup following the May 2 killing of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in the Abbottabad garrison town by US commandos.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani had not accepted Awan’s resignation till last report.
