- London, Nov 21 (IANS) Two Pakistani men were arrested in Italy early Saturday in connection with the last year’s terrorist attacks in Mumbai, Italian police said Saturday. Two more people arrested “for other illegal activities” may have some connection with two Pakistanis.
The arrested Pakistani father and son duo — Mohammad Yaqub Janjua, 60, and Aamer Yaqub Janjua, 31 — were accused of aiding and abetting international terrorism and illegal financial activities, BBC reported quoting the police.
They were arrested in the city of Brescia in northern Italy after an early morning raid, CNN reported quoting Stefano Fonzi, head of Italy’s Division of General Investigations and Special Operations.
The duo allegedly transferred $229 on Nov 25, 2008, the day before the attacks in Mumbai. The money was used for activating the Internet phone account used by the attackers and their accomplices to communicate with one another during the attacks Nov 26-29 last year.
Two other suspects who had connections with a money transfer agency in Brescia were also arrested for “other illegal activities”, Fonzi told CNN. Police were looking for a fifth suspect.
Italian police started their investigation after being alerted by Indian authorities and the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the US that funds had been transferred from Italy, Fonzi said.
The police statement said authorities investigated the agency after money was transferred under the name of a man who had never entered Italy.
