Pakistani envoy offers to quit amid memo row
November 17th, 2011 - 9:49 pm ICT by IANSWashington, Nov 17 (IANS) Pakistan’s ambassador to the US has offered to resign after being linked to a secret memo sent to Washington by President Asif Ali Zardari fearing a military coup, CNN reported Thursday.
“I serve at the pleasure of the president of Pakistan and the prime minister,” Husain Haqqani told CNN.
“I have communicated my willingness to resign or participate in any inquiry that brings an end to the vilification against the government of Pakistan currently undertaken by some elements in the country.”
Haqqani’s resignation offer follows media reports that Zardari asked the US in May to help him hold on to power because he feared a military coup after a US raid killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.
Media reports in Pakistan have speculated that Haqqani played a key role in the alleged offer. Haqqani has denied the allegations.
