Pakistan seeks UN intervention to resolve Kashmir issue
September 29th, 2010 - 11:56 am ICT by IANSIslamabad, Sep 29 (IANS) Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has told the UN General Assembly that the Kashmir issue could be resolved through UN resolutions and stressed that it was necessary for “durable peace and stability” in the South Asian region, it was reported here Wednesday.
“A peaceful resolution of Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN resolutions taking into account the aspirations of the Kashmiri people would create conducive atmosphere for durable peace and stability in the South Asian region,” Qureshi told the 192-member UN General Assembly Tuesday during the general debate.
Dawn News quoted Qureshi as saying: “The Jammu and Kashmir dispute is about the exercise of the right to self-determination by the Kashmiri people through a free, fair and impartial plebiscite under the UN auspices.”
Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna had a second chance encounter with Qureshi in New York Monday evening. The two leaders shook hands and exchanged pleasantries at a reception for Commonwealth ministers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, five days after their paths first crossed in the parking lot of the UN headquarters Thursday.
