Pakistan bans coverage of 26/11 trial
August 29th, 2009 - 10:06 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Aug 29 (IANS) Pakistani Saturday kept under secrecy the court proceedings against five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants accused of planning the attacks in Mumbai that killed over 170 people last November.
An anti-terrorism court conducted the 26/11 trial in camera at the high security Adiala Jail in the adjacent garrison town of Rawalpindi, and lawyers were apparently asked not to discuss the case with the media.
Lawyers refused to say when the next hearing would take place.
Judge Baqir Ali Rana of the anti-terrorism court who is conducting the trial was said to have issued the gag order for the media.
Private TV Dawn News reported that the proceedings were being kept secret for the protection of the judge, lawyers and witnesses.
The five LeT operatives on trial are commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, Hammad Amin, Abdul Wajid alias Zarar Shah, Mazhar Iqbal alias Abu al Qama and Shahid Jameel Riaz.
India wants Pakistan to take strong and credible action action against the LeT leaders who it says were behind the attacks.
