Pakistan awaits ‘concrete evidence’ against Sayeed
August 29th, 2009 - 9:56 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, Aug 29 (IANS) Pakistan Saturday said it was awaiting “concrete evidence” to prosecute Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief Hafiz Saeed who India accuses of masterminding the audacious 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks that killed over 170 people last year.
“We have asked India to share concrete evidence in this respect (to prosecute Saeed). Courts in Pakistan are independent,” Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters here.
He was responding to a question about the prosecution of Saeed, against whom Interpol earlier this week issued a Red Corner Notice (RCN) for allegedly hatching a conspiracy to carry out the attacks in Mumbai last November. The global police agency also issued the warrants against 22 others, including the LeT’s Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi on similar charges.
Saeed, the founder of the LeT, was put under house arrest after the Nov 26-29, 2008 Mumbai attacks. He was set free in June by a Lahore court that said it found insufficient evidence for his continued detention.
Earlier this month, Pakistan’s Supreme Court adjourned a hearing seeking Saeed’s re-arrest
India wants forceful action by Pakistan to bring to justice leaders of the LeT and says it has given enough information after providing Pakistan with five dossiers on the attacks, including information on suspects and logistics.
