Pakistan assures better media environment
June 30th, 2011 - 12:51 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, June 30 (IANS) The Pakistan government has said it is committed to providing a better environment for promoting a vibrant media in the country.
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan Wednesday said that the government was committed to playing the role of a facilitator for the media, Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
Awan was addressing a meeting of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society. She said the government was trying to resolve the issues confronting the media to enable it to perform better.
The media community been up in arms ever since journalist 40-year-old Saleem Shahzad’s body was found dumped in a canal in Punjab province two days after he was kidnapped in Islamabad May 29. His body, bearing marks of severe torture.
He is widely believed to have been seized by intelligence officials for alleging in an article that terrorists attacked a key naval base in Karachi May 22 after the navy refused to free sailors held for suspected militant links.
