Pakistan asks US to provide unmanned aircrafts to carry on drone hits along Afghan border
February 26th, 2009 - 6:07 pm ICT by adminWashington, Feb.26 (ANI): Pakistan has asked the United States to provide it with unmanned Predator aircrafts to carry out attacks on militant hideouts.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi told reporters here that Islamabad has asked Washington to provide unmanned airplanes which would enable it to hit extremists hiding in the rocky terrains along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.
“We feel that if the technology is transferred to Pakistan, Pakistan will be in a better position to determine how to use the technology and, without alienating people, achieve the objective,” The Dawn quoted Qureshi, as saying.
Pakistan has continuously objected to US led drone attacks inside its territory, saying the missiles hits were proving counter productive in the ‘War on Terror’ in the region.
Qureshi said United States must review its policy of continuing the drone attacks.
“If the disadvantages outweigh the advantages, there is a case to review this strategy,” he said.
However, White House spokesman, Robert Gibbs refused to comment on the issue.
Qureshi along with his Afghan counterpart Dadfar Rangeen Spanta are in Washington to present their stance on the Obama administration’s review of strategy for Pakistan and Afghanistan. (ANI)
