London, Oct.12 (ANI): The United States is concerned over the growing clout of the extremists in Pakistan, however, it maintains that despite the threat, Pakistan’s nuclear installations are safe.

Addressing a joint press conference with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband here, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Saturday’s brazen terror attack on the Pakistan Army General Headquarters in Rawalpindi showed that the extremists threat to that country was growing, but contended that they did pose a risk to the nuclear arsenal.

“Extremists were increasingly threatening the authority of the state, but we see no evidence that they are going to take over the state. We have confidence in the Pakistani government and military’s control over nuclear weapons,” The Nation quoted Clinton, as saying.

Addressing mediapersons, Miliband also highlighted that Pakistan was facing a ‘mortal threat’ from extremists.

He, however, said there was no immediate danger to the nuclear weapons.

“I think it’s very important that alarmist talk is not allowed to gather pace,” Miliband said.

Miliband said he discussed various issues with Clinton including the Afghan conflict, the situation in neighboring Pakistan and the crisis over Iran’s nuclear programme. (ANI)
