Pak spy agencies pulling strings of “test-tube” politicians: Chaudhry Nisar
April 26th, 2011 - 4:46 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, April 26(ANI): The role of Pakistani intelligence agencies has once again marked the proceedings of the Lower House of Parliament, with Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan raising questions on their role in domestic as well as foreign issues, and accusing them of propping up ‘test-tube’ politicians.
Chaudhry Nisar questioned the mandate of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief General Ahmad Shuja Pasha for visiting Washington, which he said was raising many questions in the minds of Pakistanis.
“Whatever the prime minister stated in his last speech in the House was not the exact reply to my questions to inquire about the mandate,” the Daily Times quoted Nisar, as saying in the House.
The government failed to come up with a clear statement as to what transpired in meetings between the ISI DG and American officials in Washington, he added.Nisar said that he was well aware of the activities of Pakistani intelligence agencies and the games they were playing. In an apparent reference to a recent sit-in staged by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan in Peshawar, he pointed finger at the agencies for pulling the strings of “test-tube” politicians. The opposition leader alleged that the funds, which were at the disposal of these intelligence agencies, were being used to prop up “test-tube” politicians, and he called upon the government to make all agencies bound to work within the constitutional parameters.
Nisar also said that some agencies’ personnel had contacted PML-N members, but he categorically stated that his party would not be a part of any game to destabilise the democratic set-up.Responding to the issues raised by the opposition leader, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said that Pasha’s visit to Washington was not something new, as it was part of the strategic relationship between Pakistan and the US.”A series of visits take place being part of the strategic partnership dialogue between the two countries,” he said, adding, “The ISI chief’s visit will be followed by visits by the defence secretary and foreign secretary as part of this bilateral strategic partnership.”
Gilani showed his willingness to address the concerns of the opposition leader vis-a-vis secret agencies, provided he came up with substantive evidence to back his allegations. (ANI)
