Pak ready to support any Afghan-led peace initiative: Qureshi
June 30th, 2010 - 12:24 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, June 30 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has said that Islamabad is ready to support any Afghan-led initiatives to restore peace in the war torn country.
Talking to reporters at the Multan airpoprt, Qureshi said that Afghan President Hamid Karzai had given a road map at the London Conference earlier this year for reconciliation and re-integration to restore peace in Afghanistan, and the international community, including Pakistan, had supported it.
“Pakistan would support every initiative for peace in Afghanistan that is Afghan-led and would extend help and facilitate them if they seek our help,” The Daily Times quoted Qureshi, as saying.
Responding to a question about a reported meeting between the Haqqani group leader Sirajuddin Haqqani and Karzai, he said that the ‘Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and the Afghanistan government has already contradicted the report.’
The meeting was reportedly orchestrated by Pakistani intelligence and army officials, who want the Haqqani network to be included in a new set-up in Afghanistan.
Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Shuja Pasha had accompanied Haqqani to the meeting, Al Jazeera had reported on Saturday. (ANI)
