Pak Punjab Govt. to pursue Saeed case provided federal Govt. gives ‘fresh’ evidence
July 17th, 2009 - 1:24 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, July 17 (ANI): The Pakistan Punjab government is ready to pursue the detention case of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed provided the federal government presents it with more fresh evidence against the 26/11 prime accused.
Punjab Advocate General Raza Farooq informed a three-member Supreme Court bench that it could take back its application to withdraw their petition against the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) verdict setting Saeed and his close aide Colonel (retired) Nazir Ahmed free if the federal government provides fresh evidence against both.
According to the Daily Times, the federal and the provincial governments had filed two separate petitions challenging the high court’s verdict. But later, the Punjab government withdrew its petition citing lack of proof against the JuD leader.
On June 2, a full bench of the Lahore High Court had ordered Saeed’s release from house arrest on the basis of a habeas corpus petition filed by his lawyer.
The high court said that it had not received substantial evidence to continue Saeed’s detention.The court also ordered the release of Colonel (retired) Ahmad, a top JuD leader.
Saeed was placed under house arrest on December 11 last year, a day after the JuD, the political wing of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), was declared a terror group by the United Nations. (ANI)
