Pak onion exporters demand reopening of Wagah border

Lahore, Jan 11(ANI): Pakistan’s onion exporters have urged the federal government to allow the export of onions to India through the Wagah border in Lahore.

Pakistan has imposed a complete ban on the export of onion to India via Wagah-Attari land route, saying that exports had to be curbed to control rising prices in their own country.

However, onions were reportedly being exported from Karachi port to Colombo, Dubai, Malaysia, Indonesia, Mumbai and some other routes.

Accompanied by leading exporters, Anjuman-e-Arthian Punjab President Chaudhry Ijaz said that the federal government was favouring the Sindh-based exporters by allowing the export of onions through sea.

Ijaz said that if the government did not allow them to export their processed onions through Wagah border, then it must also stop export from other routes, the Nation reports.

Retail prices of onions in India have reached about Rs. 80-100 per kilogram due to poor agricultural productivity caused by heavy unseasonal rains. (ANI)
