Pak official discards government’s claims of having ‘enough proof’ against Saeed
July 17th, 2009 - 5:08 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, July 17 (ANI): The Pakistan government does not have sufficient convincing evidence against Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed to pursue its case in the Supreme Court, seeking the November 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind’s detention.
While the federal government has claimed that it has enough evidence to carry on the case against Saeed, a senior official said it is finding it difficult to provide significant evidence against the JuD chief and his close ally Colonel (retired) Nazir Ahmed.
The official, on conditions of anonymity, said that it was for this prime reason, the federal government had asked the apex court to adjourn the case.
However, the federal government claimed that it would certainly be able to present some concrete evidence before the court.
“We will satisfy the court about the action against the JuD leader. We are working in close cooperation with the Punjab government to collect the proof against Hafiz Saeed. We have evidence against him,” The News quoted Attorney General Latif Khosa, as saying.
Khosa said the government has implemented the UN Security Council resolution to counter terrorism, saying it was important for Islamabad to implement the resolution inorder to showcase that it is determined to quell militancy emanating from its soil.”Pakistan might be in trouble if it showed its inability to act as required under the resolution,” Khosa added.
He said Saeed’s preventive detention was in the interest of public order and security. (ANI)
