Pak Govt asks NAB to postpone wilful default cases against top politicians
December 28th, 2009 - 1:16 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, Dec. 28 (ANI): Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has reportedly come under immense government pressure not to pursue cases of wilful default of bank loans given to a number of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) stalwarts and some opposition leaders.
According to the Dawn, the NAB was asked to defer a meeting that was going to review default cases against political stalwarts.
“At present, the government is not interested in any investigation,” a source said.
Top NAB officials may meet later this week to decide how to deal with the cases of wilful default in the light of new government instructions.
The list which was presented before parliament last year includes: Chaudhry Shujaat Husssain, Chaudhry Mansoor Elahi, former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Chaudhry Gulzar Mohammad and Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain.. According to the list, loans of over 191 billion rupees were written off between1997 and 2009.
Recently, the Pakistan Supreme Court asked the government to submit details of loans waived since 1971.
Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Saturday said the government would implement the apex court’s decision on NRO, and all law-enforcement agencies would comply with the orders.
“The list of bank defaulters will be released soon and a cell will be set up in the FIA,” he said. (ANI)
