Kathmandu, Apr 22 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has assured visiting Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna that Indian security concerns will be addressed and that the government will not allow Nepali territory to be used for any anti-India activity.

Khanal also conveyed to India that the revised Extradition Treaty and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty were awaiting the Parliament’s approval.

Earlier, in a statement Krishna said: “I conveyed to the Nepali leadership that terrorism is a common threat to India and Nepal and our security concerns are interlinked because of an open border. We are also concerned about smuggling of fake Indian currency notes to India through Nepal”.

“I also asked for an early formalisation of the revised Extradition Treaty and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty that have been pending for the last five years. These would enable better coordination and cooperation between the security agencies of the two countries,” he added.

Krishna also said that the peace process must be completed early.

He said the Prime Minister assured us that Nepal would address all of India’s security concerns and would not allow Nepalese territory to be used for any anti-India activity.

“The Nepalese side also conveyed that the revised Extradition Treaty and the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty were pending approval,” he added.

Krishna also said: “I conveyed our serious concern on the attacks on our Ambassador to Nepal, Rakesh Sood, and requested the government of Nepal to provide adequate safety to Indian diplomats.

He said that Deputy Prime Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari, with whom he had extensive talks soon on his arrival, had given the assurance that Nepal would ensure the safety of Indian diplomats and diplomatic premises in the Himalayan republic. (ANI)
