Nepal Maoists torch copies of ‘unequal treaties’ with India
January 15th, 2010 - 12:47 pm ICT by ANIKathmandu, Jan 15 (ANI): United CPN (Maoist) activists burnt copies of some Nepal-India treaties which they termed unequal, including the Sugauli Treaty, the 1950 Treaty of Friendship and the Mahakali treaty here on Thursday.
They gathered in huge numbers at Inaruwa, the headquarters of the Sunsari headquarters and made a bonfire of the copies.
“The treaty signed between India and Nepal in 1950 is unequal. Only India has benefited from this treaty. The pro-Nepal provisions in the treaty have not been implemented. That is why Maoists have launched a movement against it,” said Lilamani Pokhrel, a Maoist leader.
As a part of their demonstration, they chanted anti-India slogans by contending Nepal had failed to develop due to the unequal treaties signed with India in the past.
The then Nepalese Prime Minister Mohan Shamsher Jang Bahadur Rana and Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Chadreshwar Narayan Singh had signed the initial treaty on July 31, 1950. The treaty allows for the free movement of people and goods between the two nations and a close relationship and collaboration on matters of defence and foreign affairs.
The Maoist cadres demanded scrapping of all the unequal treaties signed with India.Earlier this week, the Maoist top brass had inspected the border encroached regions across the country as part of their fourth phase of protests for national sovereignty and independence.
The Maoists have burnt the treaties a day before Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna is visiting Nepal. (ANI)
