Musharraf delays return to Pakistan

Islamabad, Jan 19 (IANS) Former president Pervez Musharraf, who was to return to Pakistan by the end of January, has postponed his arrival in view of the “emerging political developments”, his spokesperson said Thursday.
A spokesperson for Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) said that the retired general has postponed his return on the advice of several senior party leaders, reported Xinhua.
Musharraf had been living in exile in Britain and the UAE since he resigned from his post in August 2008, fearing an impeachment by parliament.
He had announced that he will return to Pakistan between Jan 27 and 30 to lead his party in the next general elections to be held in 2013.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik Wednesday said that Musharraf will be arrested on his return as courts have issued arrest warrants for him.
Musharraf seized power in 1999 after he dismissed the elected government of Nawaz Sharif hours after he was sacked as the army chief.
An anti-terrorism court has issued arrest warrants in connection with the 2007 assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. In October last year, a court issued a warrant for his arrest over the killing of Baloch leader Akbar Bugti in a military operation in August 2006.
Musharraf has denied all charges.
