Militants storm police station in Pakistan, six dead (Lead)

Islamabad, June 25 (IANS) Militants attacked a police station in northwest Pakistan Saturday killing six policemen and taking several others hostage, Xinhua reported.

The attack took place around 4.30 p.m. at a police station in Kulachi area of Dera Ismail Khan district. Grenade blasts and firing were heard shortly after the attackers, including a woman, entered the building, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear how many policemen were held hostage. The army and police reinforcements who rushed to the site were unable to enter the building as policemen were held hostage.

The attackers had taken position on the roof of the building and were firing at the security forces outside. Police said at least a dozen militants are involved in the attack.

The casualties on the militants’ side were not immediately known. No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
