Massive ‘fake’ arms license scam unearthed in Pak Interior Ministry
January 15th, 2010 - 5:40 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, Jan.15 (ANI): In what could turn out to be a major scam in the country, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has told the Supreme Court that about one-sixth of about 32,000 arms licenses issued by the Interior Ministry were found to be ‘fake’.
Hearing a bail plea of one Shehzad Salim, who was booked by the FIA on charges of being involved in the fake arms license racket, the three member apex court bench was told that 5,500 arms licences issued by the Interior Ministry were fake.
An FIA official told the court that of these, 5,500 licenses’ fees were also unpaid, The Daily Times reports.
Salim’s counsel argued that the fake arms licenses were issued with the consent of parliamentarians, which clearly indicates the prevailing massive corruption in the present government.
“My client was a stationery supplier and had only provided a computer to the Interior Ministry. He was not involved in issuance of any fake licences,” he said. (ANI)
