Kathmandu, May 2 (ANI): Nepal Prime Minister Madhav Kumar has described the UCPN (Maoist)’s street protests as meaningless and accused them of trying to create anarchy in the country.

Addressing the nation on Saturday evening, Nepal said the strike will weaken democracy and added that new constitution cannot be made and republic cannot be institutionalised.

Saying that no government can leave the nation in chaos, he reiterated that he would not step down nor would his the government.

“It is the responsibility of all state bodies to enforce the democratic procedure, rule of law, peace and security and maintain harmony in the society,” he said.

Meanwhile, UPCN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” said any interference in Nepal’s national sovereignty would be intolerable, and added that his party and people will not bow to foreign lords.

He said that all changes in the country’s history have always been established from the street, and claimed that the nationwide strike will conclude in a day if the people support the Maoist stir.

He charged that the ruling parties want to abort the ongoing peace process and constitution drafting, and said the Maoists have taken to the people and agitation seeing that.

Meanwhile, vehicular movement came to a grinding halt due to shutdown.

Thousands of Maoist cadres have been mobilised today in order to make the strike successful. However, the Maoists have not obstructed the emergency vehicles including press, ambulances, human rights officers and milk tankers.

Maoist cadres carrying party flag thronged the major inter-junctions in the capital including Koteshwor, Chabahil, Gaushala, Maharajgunj, Gongabu, Kalanki, Balkhu, Satdobato, Padmodaya, Baneshowr, Ratnapark, Tripureshowr, among other places, Kantipur reported. (ANI)
