Kathmandu, July 2 (ANI): The CPN-UML has said the leadership of the UCPN (Maoist) for the next government could be considered only if the latter implements past agreements.

A standing committee meeting of the party held here on Thursday to review the new political scenario in the country in the wake of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal’s resignation reached this conclusion.

According to Nepalnews, UML Secretary Shanker Pokharel said they would hold a discussion on the formation of a new government under the leadership of Maoists if they move to implement the May 28 three-point agreement and the six-point agenda drafted earlier.

He also said his party would not stake a claim for leadership of the new government.

“The UML, however, would not step back if a consensus on the leadership of another party could not be forged,” he added.

He also stressed the need for forming a new consensus government by the July 7 deadline given by President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress acting President Sushil Koirala has said the parliamentary party leader is the prime ministerial candidate as per the party’s statute.

Speaking to reporters here, Koirala said: “The NC will initiate attempts for the formation of a national consensus government.

“Our first priority is a national consensus government, we will attempt for that,” he added.

Madhav Kumar Nepal announced his resignation as prime minister on Wednesday after holding onto the post for nearly thirteen months.

After his announcement, Nepal said he hoped his resignation would mark an end to the political deadlock and all other problems facing the country. (ANI)
