Lahore on high alert following terror threat
June 5th, 2010 - 2:22 pm ICT by ANILahore, Jun.5 (ANI): Following intelligence inputs and threats, provincial authorities have declared a high alert in Lahore fearing more terror strikes.
According to sources, intelligence agencies have warned concerned authorities that extremists are on the look for carrying out more attacks similar to last Friday’s brazen terror siege of the two Ahmedi mosques in the city.
Intelligence reports had declared Friday and Sunday as most sensitive days.
Security across the city has been beefed up across Lahore with security officials in plain clothes being deployed at all important locations such as the Governor’s House, the Chief Minister’s House, the Punjab Assembly and various sensitive mosques and imambargahs.
Earlier, the Lahore police launched a major crackdown across the city and its outskirts and arrested over 80 suspects, The Daily Times reports.
Three suspects were detained from areas around the Garhi Shahu mosque, which was attacked last Friday. While one of the suspects was released after interrogation, the other two were shifted to an undisclosed location for further investigation.
Last Friday, heavily armed attackers had raided two mosques belonging to minority Ahmedi sects in Garhi Sahu and Model Town areas of Lahore killing over 80 persons and injuries dozens other.
In the recent past, extremists have particularly struck on Friday targeting religious places across Pakistan to cause maximum damage, as a huge number of people gather for special prayers in mosques. (ANI)
