Chandigarh, March 27 (IANS) The Chandigarh-based family of Gopal Dass (50), an Indian set to be released from a Pakistani jail after 27 years, is elated and planning a grand party to celebrated the reunion with him, his brother said Sunday.

Gopal Dass was arrested by Pakistani police in 1984 and jailed on spying charges. Since then he is lodged in a jail in Lahore.

“Today we got a call from the lawyer of Gopal Dass and he informed us that the Pakistan president has passed the orders of releasing him from the jail. We are very happy and we would organise a gala party once my brother is back home,” Anand Veer, the prisoner’s brother, told IANS here.

“In 1984, when Gopal Dass was arrested, we were staying in Gurdaspur town of Punjab. Then suddenly one day we got the news about his arrest. We were stunned and till date we do not know the exact reason why he was arrested,” said Anand Veer, who hasretired from the Indian Army.

Anand Veer said that he was hopeful that Gopal Dass, who is unmarried, would be released in the next few days.

“I am expecting his return to Chandigarh in the next few days. All our family members will gather at our Chandigarh house to welcome him,” he said.
