New Delhi/Tehran, Aug 29 (IANS) Ahead of the release of a crucial probe report on the Feb 7 transfer of power in the Maldives, India Wednesday urged all political parties in the island nation to respect the findings and to desist from any actions that impact peace.

The Maldives, an Indian Ocean archipelago nation, has tightened security in the capital Male ahead of the release of the report by the Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) on the transfer of power in the Maldives in February 2012, which was decried by the then president Mohamed Nasheed as a coup.

“We believe it is essential for all stakeholders to demonstrate a sense of responsibility in respecting the outcome of the commission’s report, and to express views on the report of the CNI with calm and restraint,” Syed Akbaruddin, the external affairs ministry’s spokesperson, said in response to developments in the Maldives.

“Actions that might adversely impact on the atmosphere of peace and tranquility in the Maldives need to be avoided,” he said.

“India hopes that all political parties in the Maldives would take up the issues arising out of the CNI report through a peaceful political dialogue, to make a way forward for resolving the political situation in the country,” said the spokesperson.

Alluding to the India visit of Maldives President Mohamed Waheed in early May, New Delhi reiterated its commitment “to extending its fullest support and cooperation for the continued stability, peace, progress and prosperity of the Maldives.”

On July 20, the Maldives government constituted a Commission of National Inquiry (CNI) to look into the events surrounding the transfer of power in the Maldives in February 2012. The CNI was reconstituted to include a retired judge from Singapore as co-chair, and also a nominee of Nasheed.
