New Delhi, Aug 30 (IANS) India has formally agreed to route its $5 million aid for Pakistan flood victims through the United Nations.
“We welcome Pakistan’s decision to accept offer of assistance made by the government of India. Now Pakistan has suggested that the assistance could be routed through the UN, and we would be in touch with the concerned UN agencies to work out the modalities,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Vishnu Prakash told reporters here Monday.
India had offered aid of $5 million towards flood relief in Pakistan. The offer was made by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna to his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
It took Pakistan nearly three days to accept the aid, which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also offered to his Pakistani counterpart Mohammed Yusuf Gilani in a telephone call.
Last week, the Pakistan foreign office said that India should route its aid through UN.
